Datuk Lim Hong Tat graduated with a Bachelor of Economics degree in Business Administration from the University of Malaya in 1981. He joined the Maybank Group upon graduation in 1981. His banking experience covers all aspects of banking having managed branch, region, credit card and overseas business portfolios.

During his 37 years with Maybank, Datuk Lim Hong Tat had previously held several major roles with the group. Prior to his retirement in July 2018, he has served at various senior management roles as the Group Chief Executive Officer of Community Financial Services at Malayan Banking Bhd., Head of International Banking, Head of Consumer Banking, CEO of Maybank Singapore and Country Head of Maybank Group in Singapore, President and CEO of Maybank Philippines Inc, and he also served as Director of EFMA SARL.

Datuk Lim Hong Tat was named the “Retail Banker of the Year 2014” by The Asian Banker, a leading provider of strategic business intelligence for the financial services community in Asia, which made him the first Malaysian banker to win this prestigious award and it is the highest award given to the most accomplished leader in the retail banking industry in the Asia Pacific and Middle East regions. In 2017, Datuk Lim Hong Tat was accorded the Asian Banker of the Year 2017 by Fortune Times(时代财智), the Chinese business Magazine. He was also the winner of the “CEPI Asia Leadership Award – Individual”, an award created to identify industry leaders and trailblazers who are setting new standards in cards and payments for their respective organisations and client markets.
